Dr James Gavin is a lecturer in Musculoskeletal Health at the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ, who has translated from exercise to health sciences. He has interdisciplinary experience across research, specialising in physical activity promotion and intervention for people with long-term health conditions; education, leading research modules for undergraduate Occupational Therapists; and knowledge exchange and enterprise, as the Faculty lead on ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ's Engaged University Steering Group. He is particularly interested in developing and testing community-based interventions for support physical acivity behaviours.
As a member of the Long Term Conditions research group, Dr Gavin’s research is interdisciplinary, involving academics across human geography, health psychology, medical humanities, and health sciences, and aligns to the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) Wessex.

Current research
My current projects are interrelated and focus on:
- Maintaining physical activity and social connections for people with multiple LTCs. (topics - physical activity maintenance and behaviour change)
- Developing and testing a framework to evaluate community-based interventions to promote social connectedness amongst adults living in marginalised communities. (topics - social connectedness and public health)
- Developing climate change resilience for multiple long-term health conditions: co-creating policy recommendations. (topics – climate change, public health and policy)
These research align to public health priorities for local and national authorities, as well as health and social care systems globally. Locally, my research collaborates with ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ City Council, Saints Foundation, and NHS Hampshire & Isle of Wight; nationally, regionally, with the NIHR ARC Wessex and Energise Me; and internationally, via WHO Health Enhancing Physical Activity (HEPA) Europe and the EULAR Health Professionals in Rheumatology (HPR) Committee.
