Carlos Mafra is a Royal Society University Research Fellow in the School of Mathematics at the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ. His main objective is to advance the state of art regarding superstring scattering amplitudes and related topics. He is also teaching undergraduates using his expertise and commits his time to advancing the reputation of the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ in the world stage.

Current research
Carlos Mafra researches string theory perturbation theory, computing scattering amplitudes, and also a variety of related subjects such as mathematical methods to evaluate the integrals that appear in these calculations. This is one of the most important research avenues in string theory, it teaches us about the inner workings of a unified theory of quantum gravity, the holy grail of high-energy physics since the time of Einstein.

Carlos Mafra teaches Differential Geometry to fourth-year students and is currently the full supervisor of one PhD student.
Biography
Carlos Mafra joined the University in June 2016, as a Royal Society University Research Fellow. He completed his PhD studies in São Paulo, Brazil in 2008.
He moved to Potsdam, Germany for the next 3 years to work as a postdoc at the Albert Einstein Institute of Gravitational Physics. In October 2011 he started a postdoc position at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics in Cambridge, to work in the string-theory group of Michael Green (the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the time).
After a one-year research position at the Institute of Advanced Study, in Princeton USA, he moved to the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ, where he is happily to this day.
