Joanne Lord is a health economist specialising in cost-effectiveness analysis and decision modelling. She is the director of the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ Health Technology Assessments Group (SHTAC) at the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ, who assess clinical and economic evidence for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). She also collaborates with clinical and health service researchers on a variety of projects; leading health economic evaluations conducted alongside clinical trials and developing cost-effectiveness models.

- Joanne has research interests in health economic evaluation and decision modelling.
- She has worked on a wide range of applied cost-effectiveness studies, including:
- a review of newborn screening for inborn errors of metabolism;trials of diagnosis, patient education, structured decision-making and therapeutic interventions for arthritis and back pain;evaluations of diagnostic tests, preventive treatment and contact tracing for tuberculosis;a model of geographic allocation of resources for control of Chagas disease in Central America; andanalyses relating to the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Her methodological contributions include an MRC funded project on whole pathway modelling for NICE clinical guidelines and an economic perspective on test evaluation. She has also contributed to health outcome and quality of life studies.

Biography
Joanne is a health economist who has worked for over 30 years in analytical and academic roles to improve decisions about the effective and efficient delivery of health and social care services and the uptake of new technologies.
She has degrees in economics and mathematics, operational research and health economics. Her first job was in the operational research group at the Department of Health in London, where she worked on projects for local health and social service decision-making. She joined the public health department at St Georges Hospital Medical School to do research on clinical audit, then moving into the field of health economics. Joanne also worked at the Imperial College Business School and Health Economics Research Group at Brunel University, before joining the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ in 2015.
Between academic jobs, Joanne has worked twice for the National Institute for Health and Social Care Excellence (NICE): first on their early technology appraisals and later in their clinical guidelines team. This interest continues at ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ, where SHTAC produces Technology Assessment Review reports that are a key part of the evidence base that underpins NICE guidance on use of new drugs and diagnostic tests in the NHS.
