Dr Mohamed Bakoush is an Assistant Professor in Banking and Finance at ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ Business School. Before joining ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ, Mohamed worked in the Economics and Finance Department at Brunel University and has previously worked at the Monetary and Capital Markets Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Current research
Dr Mohamed Bakoush’s research sits within the field of macrofinance. He investigates how financial markets, institutions, and policies interact with the broader economy and influence macroeconomic outcomes.
His recent work focuses on the emergence of systemic risk in financial markets and the transmission channels through which such risks spill over into the real economy. This includes modelling the dynamic interactions between financial and non-financial risks—such as market, liquidity, funding, solvency, and climate risks—and analysing how these interdependencies contribute to financial instability and systemic crises.
Dr Bakoush also investigates the evolving role of financial innovation, financial technology (fintech), and digital currencies in transforming financial intermediation. His research further contributes to understanding the resilience of the financial system in the face of climate change and explores the implications of green and sustainable finance.
Methodologically, his work is highly interdisciplinary, integrating approaches from complexity science, computational modelling, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and behavioural science to address critical issues at the intersection of macroeconomics and finance.
Dr Bakoush welcomes enquiries from prospective PhD students interested in pursuing research aligned with his areas of expertise. He is also open to supervising interdisciplinary projects that apply complex systems theory, machine learning, or artificial intelligence to problems in finance or economics.

Biography
Mohamed holds a Ph.D. in Computational Financial Economics having read for his degree jointly between the Agents, Interaction and Complexity Group of the Computer Science School and the Banking and Finance Department of the Business School at the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ. He also holds an MSc in International Banking and Finance, and a BSc in Finance. In addition, Mohamed is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), a Certified Financial Risk Manager (FRM) by the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP), a Full Member (MCSI) of the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments (CISI), and holds the Risk and Artificial Intelligence (RAI) Certificate from GARP. Mohamed holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) and is a Fellow of Advance HE (FHEA).
Mohamed is eager to combine research excellence with policy relevance. His work on systemic risk and financial stability has far-reaching implications for macroprudential policy. For example, Mohamed has developed a macroprudential stress test of bank liquidity and solvency in one of his research papers which caught the attention of some central banks and he was invited to present his work at the Bank of England, and the Bank of Finland. He has also contributed to the Global Financial Stability Report published by the International Monetary Fund.
Mohamed's work in the area of financial economics has been nationally and internationally recognized. Parts of his work have been published or are currently under review in top journals. He has been invited to present his research at top conferences including the American Economic Association Annual Meeting, the Institute for New Economic Thinking Conference, the International Finance and Banking Society Conference; and the Society for Computational Economics Conference. In addition, Mohamed has been selected in global competition as one of the top 300 young economists in the world by the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings Council in 2017.
