Biography
Anne is an internationally recognised academic who began her research career in the voluntary sector (MIND) and spent more than thirty years working in higher education in London and Manchester before moving to ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ. She was an NIHR Senior Investigator. Alongside leading research directorates and major national and international programmes in applied health, she has also served as a non-executive director of an acute NHS Trust.
Anne has expertise in qualitative and mixed methods and in applying middle-range social theory to health. She has made major contributions to developing nested process and qualitative studies for health policy and practice, particularly in areas such as service use, mental health, long-term condition management, self-management support, and social networks. She has published extensively, including over 300 peer-reviewed journal articles, and authored key books on the sociology and policy of mental health such as Demanding Patients?, Experiencing Psychiatry, Mental Health & Inequalities, Mental Health Policy in Britain, A Sociology of Mental Health & Illness, and Living with Health Inequalities.
