• Understanding and improving the distribution of goods and the management of freight vehicles in urban areas, including the supply of goods to hospitals and the use of consolidation centres; 
• How optimisation techniques can be used to improve system efficiency and in what ways Intelligent Transport Systems (smart tagging of assets and the use of smartphones) can improve operating efficiency; 
• Approaches to more effectively collect and manage the movement of waste in terms of both household domestic waste collection strategies, Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) management and joint domestic/commercial waste collection strategies. He has worked on a number of research projects in these specific areas: (Department for Transport grant PPAD 9/142/034, ‘Optimising vehicles undertaking waste collections' GR/S79626/01, SUE project 55 ‘Transport and Logistics'; EP/D043328/1, ‘Green Logistics'.
• Using smartphones to manage transport operations. This has developed a prototype app for Oxfam to help them better visualise where their paid and volunteer drivers are, and allow communities of shop managers and their volunteers, area managers and drivers communicate through a social network.

CITYLAB (City Logistics in Living Laboratories)

CITYLAB is a project funded by the EU Horizon 2020 programme for Smart, Green and Integrated Transport and started in May 2015.

¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ DSP (Delivery and Servicing Plans)

The ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ Delivery and Servicing Plans (¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ DSP) project works with public bodies and private businesses to develop a sustainable strategy for managing their freight vehicle activity.

STRAIGHTSOL (Strategies and measures for smarter urban freight solutions)

The project is being led by the Institute of Transport Economics at the Norwegian Centre for Transport Research and involves 15 partners. The ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ is working with Oxfam to investigate how remote monitoring technology could be used to better optimise collection schedules from textile donation banks.

Solent Future Transport Zone

The Solent FTZ is a multidisciplinary research and development project undertaken in collaboration with the University of Portsmouth and Solent Transport, comprising ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ City Council, Portsmouth City Council, Isle of Wight Council, and Hampshire County Council. Theme 1 on passenger mobility is led by Professor John Preston and Theme 2 on Sustainable Urban Freight is led by Professor Tom Cherrett.
