Paul is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Politics and International Relations (PAIR) at the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ, working at the intersection of empirical political science and normative political theory. He is conducting research on an ERC-funded project on the formation of political process preferences in Europe (PoPPiE).
Paul’s research lies at the intersection of political sociology and democratic theory. He studies the transformation of political participation and representation in liberal democracies and its implications for the desirability and feasibility of institutional reforms. A political scientist and theorist by training, Paul has conducted extensive qualitative fieldwork in Europe and is currently involved in designing a mixed-methods project on the meaning and formation of political process preferences in European societies. Further research interests connected to his main focus include the study and formation of public opinion in (Western) Europe and the European Union. His , on the role of democratic innovations in the EU, was published in the Journal of European Public Policy.
Paul has taught undergraduate seminars on the EU, public policy, and political philosophy at the LSE Department of Government, Goethe University Frankfurt, and the University of Hamburg. He is an Associate Fellow of AdvanceHE in the UK (AFHEA).
Before joining the department in 2025, Paul completed his doctorate at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He holds master’s degrees in politics and philosophy from Goethe University Frankfurt and the University of Hamburg. During his studies, Paul was a visiting fellow at Princeton University, Northwestern University, and Columbia University.
