Module overview
The module aims to introduce you to the field of information systems and the digital aspects of management in contemporary organisations.
You will be introduced to the key definitions and conceptualisations of information systems and digital technologies. The distinction between data, information and knowledge will be outlined, and recent trends such as big data and artificial intelligence will be discussed and put into context. The components of an information system, types of systems and technologies, success dimensions, and different perspectives on digital practices and business processes will be considered, along with the processes and methods by which systems are developed and the challenges involved in doing so.
The Information Systems discipline and related research fields are examined, and you will reflect on how research themes in these subject areas have over time varied from the study of the development, use and management of these systems within their traditional organisational boundaries to the wider societal impact and sustainable development implications of information and communication technologies. By addressing business applications of information technology and key aspects of developing, managing, evaluating and working with information systems in an organisational or societal setting, the module will help you gain a better understanding of the areas studied in the Digital Strategy and Information Systems (DSIS) MSc programme and be able to position specific work in this area against its broader context.
