Module overview

Biomedical engineering brings engineering to the service of human health, and it draws on an unusually wide range of disciplines to do so. Designing a diagnostic device or a new therapy demands not only engineering skill but an understanding of anatomy and physiology, medicine and healthcare, and the personal and societal context in which patients live and health services operate. This module introduces that landscape, giving you an overview of healthcare technologies and the varied challenges that surround their research, development and use. You will explore the breadth of technologies used in modern healthcare and the engineering principles behind them, while developing an awareness of the practical, clinical and societal factors that shape how they are created and adopted. Rather than treating engineering in isolation, you will learn to see it within the wider system of patients, carers, clinicians and the healthcare industry, and to appreciate the multidisciplinary collaboration that successful biomedical engineering requires. By the end of the module, you will understand the scope of healthcare technologies and be able to reason about the diverse challenges involved in developing and deploying them. This awareness provides valuable context for more specialist study in biomedical engineering and prepares you to contribute to a field where engineering, medicine and human need meet.
