Early Career Research Fellowships in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

One element of our strategy is to identify and support outstanding Early Career Researchers to progress applications for fellowships, which enable them to build strong programmes of independent research in ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓÆµ. We have an excellent track record of converting fellowships into permanent academic positions and we can provide those candidates who are selected with guidance and mentoring in developing their research career.

Our selection process for early career fellowships aims to identify candidates with excellent track records and whose research plans complement and strengthen existing research activity in the School, which is structured in the following research sections:

  • Your CV (maximum 2 pages)

  • Your list of publications

  • An outline of your fellowship proposal (maximum 2 pages). This should describe:
    • the problem that you want to solve
    • the way in which you want to address that problem
    • the novelty of your approach to solve that problem and why you are the best person to successfully carry of the research
  • A cover letter (maximum 1 page). This should describe:
    • your PhD award date
    • the fellowship scheme(s) you are interested in applying for
    • how your research proposal fits into our School
    • the School’s Research Section that most closely aligns with your research

For applyingÌýfor the next round ofÌý,Ìý, andÌý, you should send the above documentation by 12 June 2026. ForÌýother fellowship schemes, you should send the above documentation at least 3 months before the closing date of the fellowship call.Ìý

Candidates whose proposal is considered ‘competitive’, and whose research aligns well with the School’s research themes, will receive a strong letter of support from the Head of School and commitment of resources to ensure that the applicant can rapidly establish independent research activity in ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓÆµ. We will also provide guidance and mentoring at the application and interview stages.

  • Fellowship holders will be assigned a senior staff mentor who will provide advice to assist them in successfully establishing their independent research programme in the school
  • The mentor will also be able to provide guidance and advice regarding progression through the probation period, which has 12 months of duration
  • For fellowship holders of long-term fellowships (>5 years), the fellow can apply for a proleptic appointment role, by which they will transfer into an open-ended academic post of equivalent seniority at the end of their fellowship, subject to meeting certain criteria
  • The criteria for securing a proleptic appointment will be discussed at the commencement of their fellowship and may include the demonstration that the fellow has:
    • established a successful independent research programme
    • built a high quality team of postgraduate and/or post-doctoral researchers
    • produced high-quality research (e.g. important and influential publications)
    • demonstrated a strong commitment to enhancing the reputation of the school through their teaching, enterprise activities, and/or other contributions such as outreach, public engagement, etc.
  • The formal application process for the proleptic role will typically start after 18 months from the commencement of the fellowship, and the associated evaluation process should take place within 6 months.

Competitive fellowship schemes specifically targeted at Early Career Researchers are available through various funding bodies, charities and institutions. These schemes provide the opportunity to build an independent research career and successful applicants are expected to be strong candidates for future academic posts within the university.

Application procedures and eligibility criteria for competitive long-term fellowship schemes:

  • aim to develop the next wave of world-class research and innovation leaders in academia and business. The scheme provides funding accross the whole UKRI’s remit, with no barriers to multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research or innovation
  • The Royal Society University Research Fellowships aim to provide outstanding scientists, who should have the potential to become leaders in their chosen field, with the opportunity to build an independent research career.
  • Aimed at those who require a flexible working pattern due to personal circumstances such as parenting or caring responsibilities or health issues. Female candidates are particularly invited to apply.

The following shorter term fellowship schemes are also available:

  • :Ìýfor non-UK scientists in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, who are at an early stage of their research career and wish to conduct research in the UK
  • :Ìýfor early career researchers with less than 3 years of post-doctoral experience
  • :Ìýfor postdoctoral researchers with less than 9 years of experience post PhD who comply with mobility rules
  • :Ìýaimed at scientists from black heritage background
  • :Ìýfor postdoctoral chemists in the areas of inorganic chemistry and general chemistry who are in the early stages of their career
  • :Ìýfor researchers in the areas of physical or biological sciences, mathematics, applied science and engineering, with no more than 3 years of postdoctoral experience
  • :Ìýfor candidates who have had a break for two years or more for family, caring or health reasons, and want to return to their career in research

"My Royal Society URF provided the long-term stability required to carry out an ambitious programme of research that enabled me to take my early stage work on large-scale quantum chemistry calculations and advance it to a unique novel software package for simulations of complex materials, biomolecules and nanostructures, with a large numbers of atoms, that were intractable by previous quantum approaches. The methods I developed gave insights into chemical interactions and processes of such complex systems, with potential applications in drug design and catalysis. Also the URF allowed me to build up my own research group, apply for my own research grants, and become independent as a researcher, providing the springboard for my first academic position in ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓÆµ as a Lecturer."
