Lifelong Learning will be holding a one-day cultural event on Saturday 29 March consisting of a series of short talks led by experts from within Modern Languages at ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ.
This thought provoking and inspiring conference will provide you with the opportunity to learn and engage in discussion about the voices of ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ from academics of international distinction.
As a port and gateway to the UK, ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ has always attracted migrants who have shaped the social and cultural profile of the City. One aspect of this diversity is the range of languages that can be heard every day across the city – in its streets, schools, shops, restaurants, and workplaces.During the Study Day we will explore this multilingualism, from an examination of the historical context to listening to the voices of the present day. Speakers will highlight the richness of this linguistic diversity: how it is valued (or ignored) in everyday city life; who speaks what to whom; the role of language in ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ’s cultural activities; the city’s linguistic landscape; and how this multilingualism contributes to ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ’s identity.
