Self-Funded Student Support Fund

The Self-funded Student Support Fund is a limited pot of money designed to help self-funding, Home/UK students who have experienced an unexpected change of circumstance.Ìý

Self-funding undergraduates
Those who are not in receipt of the Student Finance (UK) Tuition Fee Loan and means-tested Maintenance Loan or the NHS equivalentÌý
Ìý
Self-funding postgraduates
Those who are funding their course themselves, through a third party, or partly through the Student Finance (UK) Master's Loan or Postgraduate Doctoral LoanÌý

Applications for the 2026/27 Self-funded Student Support Fund will openÌýMonday 25 January 2027 09:00AM.ÌýWe will not accept applications before this date.Ìý

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must be:

  • be currently enrolledÌý
  • be attending university in the UKÌý
  • be paying full tuition fees directly to the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓÆµ for the current academic yearÌý
  • not have Writing Up, Nominal Roll, or Submitted statusÌý

Applicants must be able to evidence:Ìý

  • sufficient financial provision for the academic year was in place at the start of the year
  • an unexpected change of circumstance occurred through no fault of their own since the start of the academic yearÌý
  • financial hardship is presentÌýÌý

An unexpected change of circumstance is typically recognised as:ÌýÌý

  • loss of wages from regular employmentÌý
  • an evidencable, sustained decrease in family supportÌý
  • unavoidable costs related to medical issuesÌý
  • loss of funds from a non-investment scamÌý

We do not recognise exchange rate fluctuations or cost of living increases as unexpected changes of circumstance.Ìý

Applications

Applications for the 2026/27 Self-funded Student Support Fund will open Monday 25 January 2027 09:00AM. We will not accept applications before this date.Ìý

On average the form takes approximately 20 minutes to complete, depending on your situation. Once an application is received, an advisor will be in touch within 10 working days with either an assessment update or outcome.Ìý

We can help with the completion of the application form if you have questions or require additional support. Please book an appointment or email us at stufunds@soton.ac.uk. The are also able to help with completion of the application form and how to gather the appropriate documentation.

The fund has no right of appeal. The basis of the fund is for students to have made provision and to clearly evidence an unexpected change of circumstance and financial difficulty.Ìý

Things to note

Did you make sufficient financial provision for the course year?Ìý
Provision is meant to cover essential living costs as well as any other costs that were known or generally expected before the course start date.Ìý

Do you have personal savings? Ìý
Students are expected to be in current hardship and without any significant savings when they apply. Your request for financial support can be refused if a high level of savings is available to you. The savings should be used before an application is made.ÌýÌýÌý

Have you considered working to supplement your income?ÌýÌý

Are you able to demonstrate a shortfall in your finances?ÌýÌý
Students are expected to have made reasonable adjustments to their lifestyles following a change of circumstance.Ìý

Award information

Successful applicants may receive a one-time award of up to £360 to allow time to explore alternative funding options or have funding return to normal levels.ÌýÌýÌý

Awards are paid directly into the account the University holds for you. Please make sure these details are up to date. To check what details we hold, you will need to access . Click on Personal Information, then ‘Update Payment Details.’Ìý

´¡·É²¹°ù»å²õ do not cover and cannot be used toward: tuition fees, resit fees, visas and associated costs, or support for family or friends (only for the individual student).  If you are struggling to pay your tuition fees, please contact the Student Hub, studenthub@soton.ac.uk, to discuss a payment plan.Ìý

Applications are reviewed in line with Student Support Fund guidelines. Awards are discretionary, and we cannot guarantee one will be granted.ÌýÌý
