Care leavers and students estranged from their parents who meet the required criteria, will be eligible for an annual £2,000 bursary.

This bursary is paid in two equal instalments and is available for the duration of their first undergraduate course providing their circumstances remain unchanged.

To be eligible for the undergraduate Care Leaver and Estranged Student bursary you must be:

Criteria

  • on your first undergraduate degree course
  • are an enrolled Home Fee paying student

and either

  • have spent 3 months or more in UK Local Authority care, including supported accommodation schemes such as Foyers or under a Special Guardianship Order, since the age of 14. Further details on eligibility can be found here.

or

  • aged 24 or under when starting your degreeÌýand assessed as estranged from your parentsÌýby Student Finance prior to starting your courseÌýor during your studies.

Students eligible for this bursary are also entitled to Care Leaver and Estranged Student Support Package which includes:

  • a designated point of contact to provide information and advice
  • access to 365 days of halls accommodation

Undergraduate students who indicate on their UCAS application or University enrolment that they're care experienced or estranged, will be contacted by the Student Inclusion Team,Ìý once they’ve enrolled to advise on how to access the bursary and support package.

If you haven’t included this information on your application, or have subsequently been assessed as an estranged student by Student Finance during your studies, please contact us at studentinclusion@soton.ac.uk .

Any Care Leaver and Estranged Student Bursary funding provided by the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓÆµ is awarded at the sole discretion of the Student Inclusion Team, who carefully consider each applicant's supporting evidence on a case by case basis.

Further Funding

Students leaving the care of their UK Local Authority are typically classed as independent by Student Finance, as well as those assessed as estranged, and are therefore usually also entitled to the full ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓÆµ undergraduate bursary providing they meet the relevant eligibility criteria.Ìý

Care leavers and students estranged from their parents who meet the required criteria, could be eligible forÌýan annual £2,000 bursary.

Payment will only be made for the first year of a postgraduate course.

Criteria

To be eligible for the postgraduate Care Leaver and Estranged Student bursary you must be:

  • on your first postgraduate degree course
  • are anÌýenrolled Home Fee paying student

and either

  • have spent 3 months or moreÌýin UK Local Authority care, including supported accommodation schemes such as Foyers or under a Special Guardianship Order, since the age of 14

or

  • under 25 and normally permanently estranged from your parents prior to starting your postgraduate course. You must also be able to provide suitable evidence of being assessed as an estranged student by Student Finance in the final year of your previous undergraduate degree course.
