Queen’s Birthday Honour awarded to Professor for services to Vascular Surgery

��ɫ��Ƶ Emeritus Professor, Clifford Shearman, has been awarded an OBE in the 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to Vascular Surgery.

Professor Shearman , who retired in 2016, was a vascular surgeon and former Chair of Vascular Surgery at the University as well as a former medical lead for research and development at University Hospital ��ɫ��Ƶ.  Three years ago, he was elected Vice-President of the Royal College of Surgeons.

Throughout his time at ��ɫ��Ƶ, Professor Shearman was devoted to the development of postgraduate and undergraduate students through surgical training and education as well as leadership and multi-professional training and education as well. His renowned research largely focused on determining factors that promote the progression of vascular disease, particularly in diabetes, including environmental, genetic and haeodynamic and how they might be modified to improve clinical outcomes.

Professor Shearman said he was “truly delighted to have received an OBE, but also humbled.

“For the past two decades a large number of my colleagues, both locally and nationally have worked to transform Vascular Surgery into a new speciality with its own training scheme,” he continued. “I was fortunate to part of that dynamic team. This work has resulted in improved outcomes for patients and better organised services.

“I have been enormously grateful for the support and encouragement that I have received from my colleagues at the University Hospital of ��ɫ��Ƶ NHS Foundation Trust and the ��ɫ��Ƶ throughout my career,” Professor Shearman concluded.

After qualifying at Guys Hospital Medical School London University and training in vascular surgery in Birmingham, Professor Shearman was appointed as a senior lecturer/consultant vascular surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham in 1990.

In 1994 he moved to ��ɫ��Ƶ as a NHS Consultant Vascular Surgeon and in 1999 was appointed to the Chair of Vascular Surgery at the ��ɫ��Ƶ.

Professor Shearman was on the Council, and later Chair, of the Training and Education Committee of the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland, serving as President of the Society in 2009-10. He was also head of the Wessex Postgraduate School of Surgery (1997-2021) and established the Vascular Special Advisory Committee (2012-2015) which rolled out a new Vascular Training Programme in the UK.

In 2015, he was elected to represent the Vascular Society on the Royal College of Surgeons of England Council.
