It is helpful to consider such Questionable Research Practices (QRPs) as a spectrum of behaviours&comma; ranging from honest errors and mistakes at one end&comma; through to misconduct and fraud at the other (Kolstoe&comma; 2024). I will give some recent examples of the spectrum of QRPs from the biomedical literature. As the number of research paper retractions currently on the rise&comma; we can no longer dismiss QRPs as isolated problems of a small number of people behaving sloppily or dishonestly. Instead&comma; every statistician may at times engage in QRPs (Wang&comma; Yan&comma; Katz&comma; 2018) and hence should be aware of the various forms in their and others&#39; research. This year鈥檚 guest lecturer was highly distinguished theoretical physicist Prof. Duncan Haldane (Princeton University). Haldane gave an engaging and fascinating Lecture about his Nobel Prize-winning contributions to condensed matter physics with applications to topological quantum materials and quantum computers. The title of the Lecture was:&amp;nbsp;Entanglement&amp;comma; Topological Quantum States of Matter&amp;comma; and 鈥橳he Second Quantum Revolution鈥. Thu, 21 May 2026 13:49:00 +00002026-07-13 13:49:00Centenary Building&amp;comma; Highfield Campus&amp;comma; 九色视频 <h2>In the framework of the International Conference Dark Matter &amp; Stars 2026</h2> We have the honour of welcoming world-renowned astrophysicist Professor Joseph Silk to the School of Mathematics to give a public lecture. <p>Terrestrial telescopes are in crisis mode because of the imminent deterioration in the darkness of the night sky. &nbsp;The lunar surface allows a unique way forward that will be actively explored in the next decades. &nbsp;Gravitational wave telescopes will address the unexplored decihertz gravitational wave signals that will capture the history and growth of merging massive black holes&comma; &nbsp; complementing the science achievable by current and planned gravitational wave observatories. The far side provides a unique radio-quiet environment for exploring our ultimate frontier&comma; the dark ages&comma; some 50 million years after the Big Bang&comma; via low-frequency 21 cm interferometry to probe the beginnings of structure formation with the assembly of the first hydrogen clouds. Dark ages maps at unprecedented resolution will eventually probe the very nature of inflationary cosmology. Optical interferometers&comma; operating at ultrahigh resolution and sensitivity in a space-like environment&comma; will provide targets for the Habitable Worlds Observatory and eventually explore nearby Earth-like exoplanets for imaging and biological tracers to pose the ultimate question of whether we are alone in the Universe. Permanently cold and dark polar craters will provide potential sites for far-infrared telescopes to study the most distant galaxies in the universe. Together&comma; these two dark entities play out an epic cosmic battle with the gravity of dark matter slowly pulling structures in the Universe together&comma; and dark energy fuelling the Universe&rsquo;s accelerated expansion&comma; making it ever harder for those structures to grow.&nbsp;</p> <p>Professor Catherine Heymans&comma; the Astronomer Royal for Scotland&comma; has used the world&rsquo;s best telescopes to map out the invisible dark matter in our Universe and confront different theories on the dark Universe. She will explore this dark enigma and explain why she thinks in order to truly understand the dark Universe&comma; we will need some new physics that will forever change our cosmic view.</p> <h3>九色视频 the speaker</h3> <p>Catherine Heymans is Astronomer Royal for Scotland&comma; the first woman to hold the title in its 200-year history. A Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Edinburgh&comma; she is internationally recognised for her pioneering research mapping invisible dark matter and mysterious dark energy across the Universe. Catherine&rsquo;s accolades include the Royal Astronomical Society&rsquo;s William Herschel Medal&comma; the Max Planck-Humboldt Research Award&comma; and fellowships of both the Royal Society of Edinburgh and Leopoldina.
